THE DEVIL CAME KNOCKING

She pushed desperately to get out 

I screamed within whenever she tried 

Fear pushed her back every time 

Afraid people see the youth inside 

I was a child not yet an adult

But saw the signs of growing pains

Boys started watching, whistling 

Sobbed within, let me remain the same  

Grew up with fear as my companion 

Youth stayed imprisoned, bound in chains 

Too shy to speak, face burning

Lonely, my mask hid a thousand dreams 

Consumed with guilt I tried to reach out 

Longing to be loved and loving too

No one wanted to know me 

Rejected and hurt, what could I do?  

I grew up not knowing things of youth

A woman bound and hurting inside 

Longed to be free how could this be?

There was no hope waiting for me

The devil came knocking at my door

“Give up trying girl”, he tempted me 

“No one likes you, you’re on your own      

Kill yourself now and you will be free”

I ran out terrified of this voice

But then another spoke to me

He was loving and tender

He understood the deep fear in me 

Embraced in his arms so tenderly

His cleansing love poured all over me 

It washed me clean, my sins fell off   

I knelt in awe beneath the Cross 

What love is this? I will not let go

Crucify my fears, renew my youth 

Set her free for I must speak

To tell others of this mighty truth 

It’s never too late to find your youth

Body grows old, but the spirit lives

To release those unfurled wings

To fly in the sky and truly live
