Jumping Ahead of God

² he said to Nathan the prophet, “Here I am, living in a house of cedar, while the ark of God remains in a tent.”

³ Nathan replied to the king, “Whatever you have in mind, go ahead and do it, for the Lord is with you.”  2 Samuel 7:2-3  (NIV)

When we read all of 2 Samuel Chapter 7, we find the story of God’s covenant to David about continuing his line forever.  This is a great promise that is true for us today, because Jesus was from the line of David.

This scripture seems very reasonable.  David had riches and a wonderful palace, while the tabernacle was placed in a tent.  This didn’t seem right to David, so he mentioned to the Prophet Nathan that he wanted to build a great place for God.  This is a noble idea and Nathan agreed.  However, Nathan didn’t ask God if He wanted that.

We read on and find that God didn’t have that in mind for David to do at all.  Nathan and David had jumped ahead of God and forgot to ask Him what they should do.  We often find ourselves in this situation.  We want to do what we think is right without asking God if that is His will.  However, God saw David’s heart and ended up making a covenant that was unbreakable.

We may find ourselves in a place where we think we know what to do, so we go ahead and do it, only to find out it wasn’t God’s will. We may have to redo things His way. This is to teach us to always seek God’s will.  As David saw, it is very worth it in the end.
