A miracle took place when I was young
our family vacation had just begun
a rented log cabin at Big Bear lake
dad promised us youngsters we'd see no snakes.

The birds were singing and flying above
while squirrels and chipmunks frenzied in love
we played all day it was getting late
mom called us in was time for steak.

The sun was setting the fireplace lit
we heard a scratching and then a hit
mom let out a scream, look! A deer
and there at the window, an eight rack with no fear.

Four little kids and mom hand in hand
tiptoed as hunters we had no plan
The deer stood his ground, we moved right in
now we're face to face, the deer never ran.

We oohed and we aah-ed
at the magnificent site
then up jumped ole dad--- oh, what a fright
holding the deer head up with delight.

We laughed and we laughed till dad came in
he placed the deer head back on the wall with a grin
dad went to heaven a few years back
I'll never forget him, his name was Jack.
