Before we tell anyone what they lack or what they are missing, we need to follow the example of Jesus Mark chapter 10: “Then Jesus, looking at him, loved him, and said to him, “One thing you lack….”.The word translated love comes from the root “agape” and refers to the highest love of all, wanting the highest good of the other person. Even though Jesus was motivated by such love in what he said, it was still no guarantee that his words would be received or that the recipient would act upon them. In this case, in fact, the rich young ruler went away sorrowful, as though he was unwilling to implement what Jesus recommended. This doesn’t mean he never did, just that he was not willing to implement his words at that moment. At any rate Jesus’ love earned for him the right to speak and penetrate to the heart of the matter.
