DEUTERONOMY

Author: Moses and Joshua. (See Chapter 34 Generally attributed to Joshua his successor)

 The message of Deuteronomy was given around 40 years after the 10 Commandments given at Mount Sinai. The first generation of Israelites who received the law died in the wilderness after 40 years of wandering because they failed to believe God’s promise to go before them in the victory. Deuteronomy was given to that generation who followed, and it was given as preparation as they look forward to entering into the Promised Land.

 If you were to compare the message of Deuteronomy with that given in the book of Exodus, you will find that there is more detail given to the meaning of the law. Perhaps Israel's disobedience required further elaboration due to the need for a clearer explanation of the law’s importance.

Deuteronomy is given as a review of the past teachings of God for His people, and its purpose is to prepare them to more properly face the difficulties that lay before them.

 Some of the more important details in Deuteronomy is a song given in chapter 32 by Moses as a reminder of God's past blessings and chapters 26 to 28, there is a renewal of the covenant made with the children of

Israel which contains promises of great blessing to those who are faithful and a warning to those who choose to disobey God and experience the consequences that follow.

 The end of the book, usually attributed to Joshua, speaks of Moses last days as he viewed the Promised Land from a distance, being unable to enter d because of an act of unbelief.

 If there is any doubt as to the meaning of the law, Deuteronomy removes all doubts and gives a clear understanding of this matter of personal holiness.

Holiness is still a requirement for effective ministry today.

 2. From Verse 2, how far away were they from reaching the promised land when they refused to believe God? How long did it take for them to get there?
