Valentine

Reflecting long on this, of all days, Valentine’s …

                the prayer is,

                                when will you ever be kind?

                It no longer matters now –

the frequency of your valleys and heaven’s violations:

what aggravates your soul, still thwarts innocence and deliberation,

                                … what shutters your sleepy eyes to my love.

I have arrest among the homeless, and a charge among the abandoned.

How can You say You care about the begotten, which You have not foreseen,

when You have not aroused a risen Christ, the impressed seer of Your heart?

Why must You reward deception and delight in the coming break-up?

                Tell me, the last of Your chimney sweeps,

                            in a shyness of outer works,

                   what words shall brush away the soot

       and unchoke the vanity of Your lovelorn recovery,

                   set straight the return of Spirit smoke

                               of a boxed-in Valentine?
