But from the tree of the knowledge of good and evil you shall not eat, for in the day that you eat from it you will surely die. Genesis 2:17 NASB

When God created man, he provided him with all that he needed to survive. He also told him what he was supposed to do and even graciously provided him with a helper to support him. Every information that was important for man’s survival was also clearly spelt out to him. God specifically told him what he was supposed to eat and what he was to stay away from. However, I always wondered why God did not tell him about the devil and how crafty he could be. That detail seemed unimportant to the Lord.

I wondered if the story would have been different if the man and his wife knew about the devil. But I doubt that, because we are currently aware of who the devil is and his schemes, yet we still listen to him and disobey God. I believe God didn’t tell the man about the devil because obedience to God wasn’t really about the existence of the devil and his influence or even man’s desires. Obedience to God is about man’s understanding of who God is and trembling at His word. Trembling at the word of God is putting God’s word above every desire, word, thing, person or being. If we are to tremble at God’s word and understand that He will do what He tells us, we will be able to live a more fruitful Christian life. We will not only avoid certain wrong turns, but we will be able to have more faith in God as we trust Him to work in our lives.
