Dr. Phil quotes his Dad as saying, "You wouldn't worry so much
about what people think of you if you knew how seldom they did."
Wow -- doesn't that hit you between the eyes?

We had a friend, now deceased, whose constant concern was
about the impression she made and whether or not people
thought she looked nice. She was obsessed with a concern
about what people thought of her.

Self esteem is good up to a point, but if concern about it
dominates your life, then it switches from positive to negative.
In Romans 12:3, Paul says, "For I say, through the grace given
unto me, to every man that is among you, not to think of
himself more highly than he ought to think; but to think
soberly, according as God hath dealt to every man the measure
of faith." The nlt version says, "... I give each of you this
warning: be honest in your estimate of yourselves, measuring
your value by how much faith God has given you." If you are a
Christian, it isn't really all about YOU or ME -- it's about the
quality of our walk with God -- more of Him, less of self!

Humility is also good up to a point, but if you think feeling
worthless is a spiritual attribute, think again. When Paul said
"don't think of yourself more highly than you should," the converse
is also true, don't think of yourself any less than you should. The
key is balance. God made you, and He doesn't make junk, but He
doesn't make "showboats" either. Either extreme is our creation --
not His. Strike a good balance in your Christian life.
