I am the Lord who heals you. – Exodus 15:26
From my own perspective, I can say I was healthy. My body mass index fits my size and age, been doing regular exercise and occasional visits to the gym, and conscious of food that I take – not too sweet and fatty. I was confident and comfortable with my health condition until a mild heart attack jolted me from my apathy.
The doctor who reviewed my case immediately prescribed I should undergo angiogram and possible angioplasty. Toxic dyes in my veins and the stent that would be inserted permanently are thoughts I cannot imagine. There must be another way. I sought a second opinion and was led to a doctor who introduced me to the concept of ‘healing.’ In contrast to an invasive intervention, he prescribed a natural way of addressing illnesses.
The internet has a trove of materials discussing natural ways of healing. I was introduced to naturopathy and what the Bible has to say about illnesses and healing. My personal experience led me to these health truths.
- Living things can heal itself. This is a basic scientific principle that differentiates living things from an inanimate object. A person’s body has interlocking systems that ensures all parts are doing according to its purposes. It has an immune system that repels alien objects that may harm the body and disrupt normal functioning of any part. We were designed to live the ‘full years’ given by God. As such, people can be healed the natural way.
- Well-being can be maintained by following God’s commandments on proper nutrition. The Bible prescribes plant-based diet both for sustenance and for healing. Ezekiel 47:12 says, ‘Their fruit will serve for food and their leaves for healing.’ As Daniel and his friends proved to their Babylonian captors, fruits and vegetables are the right food to nourish our body.
- Sin destroys our health. We disobey God and eat what should not be taken into our bodies. It’s a garbage-in-garbage-out situation. The food we eat causes most of the illnesses we acquired. We disobey God and take in too much of unhealthy foods - full of fats, sugar and salt. Our illnesses are not punishment for our sins but are consequences of our choices.
- Medical interventions today are aimed at controlling certain illness but not healing. Specific medicines are prescribed for each illness, but with side effects that are harmful to other organs. The side effects will require another set of medicines which will affect other parts of the body as well, and the cycle continues. In the end, the patient has a lot of medicines to take, but healing is a far-off possibility.
- Healing is possible and it can be done God’s way – the natural way. Illnesses can be healed and reversed. It will take time, as it also took years for us to destroy our bodies. A complete lifestyle change, returning to plant-based diet and restoring health to body organs through natural remedies, is the only way.
