Lord God,

As Christmas day approaches again,

It can be easy to just think of it as another event on the calendar,

After hearing the narrative of the birth of Jesus countless times,

It seems like we no longer have the same wonder or gratitude,

We once had for this historical event,

And it’s tempting to just gloss over or even ignore the message of Jesus’ birth this year,

Thinking that we know about this message so well,

And have no need to focus on it anymore,

So Lord, please open my heart anew to your Word,

As I read about the birth of Jesus again this Christmas,

Help me not to be hard-hearted or to think that I know it all already,

But open my eyes to see that your Word is unexhaustive,

And that we can never hear about Jesus enough,

Keep teaching me things that I have previously missed in your Word,

Or challenging me in new ways,

Keep convicting me of the importance of Jesus’ birth,

So that I may be able to tell others about it too,

And as I read through this amazing event again,

I pray that I would come to understand more about your love,

Which is too amazing to fully understand,

So that I may celebrate this Christmas with joy and wonder anew for your glory.
