A Sword So Sharp

Notice in Revelations Chapter 1 v6  and in Chapter 2 v12 that Jesus is described as having a sharp sword.  He is our example also in that, we must keep our swords sharpened. The sword is the one offensive piece of armor for the fully armed heavily armed soldier which we are all called to be in God’s great army in which we are all called to be. (See Ephesians 6, vs. 12-17) (  It’s not enough for us to be merely armed if our swords are dull.)  As we have seen before, Jesus’s sword was so sharp it took only 3 swipes with it to drive off  the devil with his whole arsenal of tricks at that given time. (Luke 4) Having a sharp sword means being in the word on a daily basis (it’s daily bread according to the Lord’s prayer not weekly bread) and having it spoken by the Word Himself into our lives in a practical way.  The word “practical” means affecting the” practice” of our faith.  The duller the sword the more unnecessary work and warfare we make for ourselves, when the work and warfare are already plentiful enough without our having to add to them.  With a dull sword we are just bluffing with nothing to back us up and the enemy knows it,  but a sharp sword helps to make us the real deal and a real threat to darkness.

It is a double-edged sword, remember, because one sharp edge deals with our own selfish old nature and the other sharp edge deals with demonic spiritual opposition.  The sharper the edges though the more dangerous the weapon and the more careful we must be not to mishandle the sword, even causing injury to ourselves or unnecessary and uncalled for injury to others.

Ecclesiastes 10 v 10 tells us that the duller is the blade the harder the work for the one wielding it.  We can’t afford to waste any more of our energy.  We will need every precious ounce of what energy God allots us for its intended purpose.  It is only with our swords continually being sharpened that we will have the wisdom and skill to succeed in the tasks to which our Great Commander and Chief sends us.  We are not speaking here merely of a full mental knowledge of the written Word, although that is a good thing.  We are talking rather about regular daily living interaction and transaction with the spoken Word. Amen.
