My God

Matthew 10:34-36, ESV

34“Do not think that I have come to bring peace to the earth. I have not come to bring peace, but a sword. 35For I have come to set a man against his father, and a daughter against her mother, and a daughter-in-law against her mother-in-law. 36And a person’s enemies will be those of his own household. 

            Though raised in a “Christian” home, I am the son of a narcissistic mother.  Like the Pharisees, my mother prided herself on her religiosity.  So much so that it gave her grandiose feelings of superiority over other members of the churches we attended; and there were a few.  She church shopped until she could find one that no longer threatened her theological geo-dome.

            As a child, I thought my upbringing was normal.  I idolized my mother, and considered that an admirable trait.  Little did I know at the time, but that is precisely what she had fashioned me to do.  God was the ambience in our home, but mother was the core.

            I am thankful to my mother for introducing me to Jesus at a young age.  Though I rebelled later, Jesus continued to pursue me, and now I have begun to know a Savior that is much different than the one I was taught.  He gives; not only that which he has no more use for.  He comforts; not simply to get appreciation in return.  He guides; to direct us in a way that will benefit us, not merely to accomplish his own agenda.  He loves; even when that love is not deserved, and not returned.
