Christian Living
“I’m not called to evangelise.” It’s a lie straight from the Master Deceiver, believed and passed on by so many. It has been bandied around to the extent that many Christians use it as an excuse to do nothing in outreach.
Yes, some are called to be evangelISTS, a specific spiritual gift as per Ephesians 4:11, but all are called to evangelISE in whatever way we can. Who else will do it but us?
There may well be a specific calling on a person’s life, but that shouldn’t mean he or she abandons the unsaved millions to their fate. It doesn’t take an enormous amount of boldness, time or effort to spread the gospel, as we’ll see later.
WHY?
Why should we all do it? One scripture alone is a good reason. “The Lord is… not willing that any should perish, but that all should come to repentance.” (2 Peter 3:9). If God is not willing that they perish, we should not be willing either. To perish means to experience the second death (Revelation 20:15).
Jesus gives us this instruction: “Go into all the world and preach the gospel to every creature.” (Mark 16:15) The world for the most part is not found inside the church.
HOW?
How will they avoid perishing by coming to repentance? By hearing the gospel. The true gospel, not a watered-down version.
The Apostle Paul says “ And how shall they hear without a preacher?” (Romans 10:14).Today the interpretation seems to be Paul was telling us to preach inside the church—to the converted. Paul was talking about the unsaved outside the church. “For God so loved the world…” means those in the world.
OUR TASK
We have the task today of being messengers. Human nature is the same. The devil is still here, sin and evil abound. The evening TV news tells us that.
Okay, Romans 10:15 tells us: “How will they preach unless they are sent.?” Granted, preaching outdoors needs enablement from God, but evangelism need not necessarily be preaching. A tract containing the gospel will be read. It will go from person to person. The Holy Spirit will convict and change a person’s life.
IT’S EASY
Believers don’t have to be super-bold. Set aside half an hour on the next trip into town. Leave leaflets on buses, trains, in mailboxes, phone boxes, It’s time well spent and it’s easy to do. If you have a heart for it, God will make you bolder.
The important thing is, once your gospel tract, or the message on your T-shirt is read, people cannot say they don’t know, that they haven’t heard.
RESULTS
You say, “What’s the point?” Isaiah 55:11 says: “So shall My word be that goes forth from My mouth; it shall not return to Me void, but it shall accomplish what I please, and it shall prosper in the thing for which I sent it.” There will be results, though you might not hear about or see them.
Many Early Church believers fearlessly died early in the cause of Christ. Today, multitudes of Christians will not even hand out a few tracts for Jesus.
Discipleship, Sunday School, youth nurturing, Bible study, prayer, are worthy. Outside of those, church members are entangled in a giant cobweb of unimportant activities within church walls. Enmeshed in a net of church-focused, inward-looking Christianity that has no influence on the eternal fate of millions.
BRING ON THE REVOLUTION!
It’s time for a revolution regarding outreach. Time to sweep away the cobwebs; break out of the net.
Can anything be more repugnant than a human being perishing eternally when it is not God’s plan? Refer to John 3:18. We cannot make them believe, but we sure can pass on the message.
