In Acts 10 we read the account of the meeting between Cornelius and Peter. In the account we learn that both men had received a vision from God through the Holy Spirit. Cornelius’ vision was to let him know to send for Peter, who was in Joppa. The reason for the meeting was not totally explained, yet, Cornelius obeyed and did send for Peter.
Peter’s vision was to teach him a lesson about human partiality, in God’s not choosing to be partial. Although God had made a promise to Israel, eventually they chose to reject their Messiah. God does not show partiality based upon the outward appearance of man. God is concerned with the inside. Christ had many conflicts with the scribes and Pharisees over their wrong attitude in attaching importance to man-made laws rather than God’s laws. He reprimanded them, telling them that they needed to clean the inside of the cup first before attempting to clean the outside.
Salvation is not to be had through outward appearance, but through inward change. Only he who is willing to live a life in contrast to that dictated by this world will see the kingdom of God. One must die to self.
Peter witnessed the Holy Spirit being poured out upon those gathered in the house of Cornelius. These were then baptized in water in the name of Jesus Christ.
We must always remember that outward appearance seems to be of importance to man, but the inside is where the treasure lies. Let your treasure be in Christ Jesus.
