There is more to Ventura than just sun, surf and sand; Ventura also has a lot to offer when it comes to culture. Ventura and its neighboring cities have a wide variety of different venues for the performing arts, visual arts, and musical arts.
If you're looking for a great place to see a play, look no further than the Rubicon Theatre Company located on East Main Street. This local theater puts on plays and musicals such as The Tempest, Lonesome Traveler, Steel Magnolias, Daddy Long Legs, Hello! My Baby, Doubt, and others. Ticket prices generally range from $25 to $75 depending on the seat location and production.
Another great place to see plays in the Ventura area is just 20 minutes south in Oxnard at the Elite Theater Company located on South B Street. The Elite Theater Company's playhouse is situated in the historic Heritage Square district of Oxnard and has put on plays like The Lillies of the Field, The Miser, The Sunset Limited and Escape From Happiness, just to name a few. There are various ticket price ranges and packages to choose from including one pass that includes a wine tasting at a nearby wine cellar, a dinner at a Heritage Square restaurant and tickets to a play at the Elite Theater.
The Santa Paula Theater Center, located in Santa Paula on South Seventh Street, is just twenty minutes northeast of Ventura. This quaint theater is situated at the foot of the Santa Paula Ridge, and the mountainous backdrop gives the theater a unique ambiance. The Santa Paula Theater Center has put on such plays as Prelude to a Kiss, A Trip to Beautiful, Death Takes a Holiday, A Life in the Theater and many others. There are also various concert events that take place at the Santa Paula Theater Center, so be sure to check out their calendar when planning your visit to the area.
If you're a lover of the visual arts, be sure to visit the Carnegie Art Museum in Oxnard. This world-class art museum can found on South C Street and offers a wide variety of exhibits both permanent and touring with everything from oil paintings and photography to mixed media and sculptures. Be sure to check out the museum's calendar as there are often art lectures, poetry readings and free admission days for families. Admission on regular days is $3 for adults, $2 for seniors and students and $1 for children under the age of six.
Ventura also has its art museum, called, of course, the Museum of Ventura County. This museum can be found on East Main Street and features an eclectic mix of art. Here, you will find everything from photography and artistic objects from ancient times to monologues and clothing and other objects from the 18th century until present times. The museum is open Tuesday through Sunday 11 am to 5 pm. Admission is $4 for adults, $3 for seniors and $1 for children between the ages of 6 and 17, children younger than six are free.
For even more arts, you can visit the Santa Barbara Contemporary Arts Forum, located on Paseo Nuevo in Santa Barbara, just 40 minutes up the coast from Ventura. This forward-thinking museum strives to house a wide-ranging collection of various types of art from an even wider range of artists from all kinds of backgrounds. The museum is open Tuesday through Saturday 11 am to 5 pm and Sundays from noon to 5 pm.

Don't worry; there are plenty of venues for the music lover in the area too. You can start by seeing a musical performance of the Santa Barbara Symphony at the Granada Theater, located on State Street in Santa Barbara. Each annual season runs from mid-October to mid to late May.
If rock n' roll or hip-hop is more your style than the symphony you will probably be able to catch a show at the Majestic Ventura Theater located on South Chestnut Street. This has been a favorite local venue for acts such as Adam Ant, GWAR, Unwritten Law, the B52s and many, many others.
