The Good Man

There was once a man who others considered good,

He always tried to do everything the way Jesus would,

He worked hard at his job, he volunteered in his community,

He showed love to all and rarely made an enemy,

He always lent a helping hand to people in need or alone,

In whatever he did or said his integrity was made known,

He gave money at church and served in many ways,

He remembered to pray at the start and end of every day,

He sought to be a shining example of serving God and others well,

But even with all his virtues nobody could tell,

How much he struggled with trying to earn God’s love,

No matter what good he did, he knew it would never be enough,

Then one day with a friend he opened the Bible to read,

And came to understand the truth of his spiritual need,

And when he heard the good news, his spirit did lift,

The news that God sent Jesus into the world, his most precious gift,

That while we were still enemies of God and in our sins lost,

Christ died on the cross and bore our sin’s cost,

And God raised him from death and made him Lord of everything,

And now through him all can share in eternal life and forever his praises sing,

So in light of God’s truth, this man could now finally see,

From all of his guilt, God’s grace had now set him free,

In God’s love and promises he could now rest safe,

For he had now turned to Christ and in him had put his faith.
