At that moment the curtain of the temple was torn in two from top to bottom. The earth shook, the rocks split and the tombs broke open. The bodies of many holy people who had died were raised to life. They came out of the tombs after Jesus’ resurrection and went into the holy city and appeared to many people. Matthew 27:51-53 NIV

The curtain mentioned here is that which separated the Holy Place (where only priests were allowed under penalty of death) from the Holy of Holies (only the High Priest was permitted admittance, and only once a year, on the Day of Atonement).

Two things we can take away from the renting of the curtain are the following. First, it signifies now a new relationship directly between God and each human. No longer does a priest need to serve as a go-between God and the individual. How much God loves us that He desires a personal relationship with each of us. Secondly, the curtain was rent from top to bottom. This signifies that the new relationship established between God and the individual is God’s doing, and not man’s. It is established through the Father sending His Son. His Son let us know the will of the Father, and the Son carried out the plan of the Father. What we are asked to do is to believe in His Son, who He is, and the fact that we have salvation, and reconciliation to the Father only through His Son, Jesus Christ.

As the curtain in the temple has been torn, accept the invitation offered through Jesus Christ. Be a child of God. Live in the love of Christ.
