Hearing Aids

A shrill noise startles me awake.  I grab my glasses so I can see the clock.  It’s 6:30.  Who is calling at this hour?  That persistent telemarketer again?  Thank goodness for caller ID.  No, it’s my East Coast friend.  “Hi! Glad to hear your voice but can you give me a sec.  I need to put in my hearing aids.”

Glasses and hearing aids compensate for the loss common to aging that affects my eyes and ears.  If I was living before their invention, I might be unable to manage on my own. But peripheral noise is also amplified, and can drown out significant conversation.

What about spiritual hearing aids?  My greatest happiness is hearing God, even when I am not happy with what I’m hearing.  I am simply grateful to hear Him.  However, what He says to me is often hard to understand because of the external and internal noise in my head.

I don’t hear God with my physical ears but I do often hear Him speaking to me through my pastor, through my sister, through a friend.  His Spirit whispers to my spirit and I eagerly listen and take note.  He has spoken to me often through the written word. I sometimes need to ask someone to write what they are saying if I am not sure of what I am hearing.  God has given me His words in writing and patiently repeats Himself if I ask for confirmation of what I think I am hearing.

Let us be thankful for every instrument that helps us hear God.  Like young Samuel, I may misunderstand at first who is calling, but with help from the aids God has provided, I am eager to respond, “Yes, LORD, your servant is listening.” (I Samuel 3:10 NLT)
