THE BEGINNING OF PROPHECY (Part 1 of 4)
(in excerpted form)
[from the (five) Books of Beginnings]
Chapter 1
As it was afterward Genesis,
when all the waters were gathered into basin … dry land appeared,
and a new Baptist arose.
Laughing and scorning,
we will not hear of such a terrible and vengeful God;
the prophet seemingly lost,
himself finding God at the halfway house of life
trying to cure his addiction to the truth.
His face is ugly; his nostrils are congested; his eyes be puffed up;
recognize well, mock truly – though your sins form the pollen,
and yourselves consist the internal scars!
Why must you tempt me?
You live on a revolving globe, an evolving plane,
yet you say, why does He, the Lord, run?
This now is strange:
the one gift it was incumbent on you to realize, you did not receive.
I will teach you all things, because, in need you must know them.
Therefore I made mention to the wind
the sorrow of my stead.
And the spirit whispered in return, “then weep”.
But I said, what for shall I weep – not their clothes ….
themselves are the fad.
And the day comes when He shall no longer include us among his wardrobe.
For a trend has passed in the making of Man;
while better drafting plans are engineered
toward the close of another season.
The summer lawn has withered,
and all the flower heads have cast their seeds onto the pavement.
Who are these kin to describe themselves unique?
the mystery of knowing ‘Master should clean underneath his fingernails
and lick his open wounds!’
“Bleed not on me, stranger –
I have no lintel or blanket to mark my tribal clan.”
Feel for a baptism … over drowning;
prefer plagues of humiliation … over end-time judgement.
Still, for all their tears of oppression,
they have no Comforter.
And comforter equals a provider of hidden omens:
brought to blessing by his mercy, enlivened by your love –
except they came bringing doubt to faith;
I arrive bringing faith to doubt.
Against the mill wheel the grains of wheat are grinded;
see the fine dust rise to just a breath of breeze.
[so then these are the uncircumcised in heart] No,
not many will be saved, though many lift up their voices unto heaven;
leaving it to self to resuscitate his holy mission. Hence and forever,
it shall be that I shall be the one sent preaching into the desert,
“Make straight the way of the Lord. Keep his path open!”
He must decide who from among his children
shall follow him into the Promised Land.
Then the faithful shall yell and the heathen shall bellow.
For at last Judah shall be at rest.
And so I imagined sister
living among the natives, preaching them a fear of the Lord.
‘I am come from a distant country, but not so far away,
or up so steep a climb that you cannot visit me.
Or will you be heathens always?’
I brought forth Jacob out of Egypt,
and sacrificed an army so a remnant might escape bondage in Hell.
I led and guided them through the wilderness, presented a gift of tablets,
so they might give practice to my law.
I established them on the highway
of exceptional conduct.
Yet when they rebelled against me,
and returned to their evil ways,
I did smite them with serpents, and plagues, and grievous punishments.
I fought their battles,
and delivered into their hands their enemies. Instead,
they trusted not in the Lord of their salvation, nor in his many signs and wonders.
Therefore, I set my crown upon a new king, a wise and gentle ruler over Israel.
To whom it is personally addressed: Misbegotten Enterprise –
If it has profited you nothing knowing Christ: Wasted Capital,
nor buying my word and affording my grace – Lost Venture.
Toward what purpose have you labored long,
or built high, or contracted much?
To whose benefit have you gleaned knowledge,
and put a great shine on your marble temples?
I am a primeval forest for your towers, says the Lord;
I am a virgin of unheralded wisdom… if you had desired me,
and paid the marriage price,
this evening my chastity I would have given you,
and rescinded my holy veil.
All your pleasures have been conditioned with harlots;
and the wages are steep: she has exacted your soul.
Now all your mournings
have permeated vain and empty atmosphere – the sufferings
of the unsaved provide no credit unto their salvation.
With blood from your own wrist, you have authorized a will
and cauterized its seal in sanguine print –
though it was before you to live and inherit a kingdom.
You go along everyday feeling the sun,
your tanned skins preened for beach play and open festivals
(all couples engaged from all sets matched),
gloriously ignorant of the Lord, you God.
Everyday the spring is compressed,
the rocks withhold their tension;
then come the rain,
and the lava, and the earthquakes –
Where is the Lord?
How is it … we suddenly deserve these … natural censures,
these massive demonstrations of divine disapproval?
Behold, the harvest is in,
and it is all crushed with thistles!
To the divisive wind were thrown the mixed seeds of everlasting life.
So the husk is eaten, while the fruit is cast upon the heap.
Abide in death:
this style to breed flesh, and the flesh evil.
Here so I have set about clearing wood, cutting vines, and uprooting stumps.
Here so I have set about marking boundaries and making new fields …
and I have set about a mighty ploughman
to mark the furrows straight and deep.
Like a horse
he grows weary at the bit. When will supper bell bring day’s end
and a call to refreshment?
The reins sting; the harness summons lather –
My name! My name! My name!
Only this resolve. Who I am, unfound;
when next you recognize such, I will lie dead in your streets.
Chapter 2
Into study
I did wander;
into shallow reason and cresting doubt,
but never into faith.
When in this service of a subjective thing,
every private soul lay hurt.
Though you marvel, yet cannot revel.
Though you believe, yet cannot accept.
Relinquish in effigy more personal demons.
And the hosts of my graduation
seem like mourners,
and the commencement guests my pallbearers,
with God and Satan acting also – a band of in-house mortifiers.
This is the witness of the Son of Man: the word of the Lord came unto me on this day, saying, Son of Man, prepare a steak for your meal tonight; allow it to thaw, and pound it, and then so bake it in sauce which is very appetizing.
And I did as the Lord commanded; and lo the meat was delightful to the palate; it was moist and juicy, that it should melt in my mouth.
Now after seven days, the Lord returned to ask me, what did you eat for supper seven days ago? I said, I remember not, my Lord; can one remember what is eaten seven days hence?
And He said, do you not recall even the meat of the kine? Oh, yes, Master, I said, forgive me; I remember that it was good.
Then the word of the Lord came unto me, saying, take a spade, and make haste to the garden to dig the herb which I will tell you thereso to find.
And I did as the Lord commanded; I boiled water on the stove, and cut the herbs, minced and ground them, and poured them into the water for soup. And behold, the soup was extremely bitter, and I loathed to drink it. So I seasoned it with salt, but still my cup was bitter.
Now after three days the Lord returned to inquire, Son of Man, saying, how is your health? And I spoke, very well, thank you, my Lord.
Later the word of the Lord spoke again, bidding me walk to the gravel pit, and there sup on a meal of stones.
And I did as the Lord commanded; and I took a handful of pebbles and stones, and placed them inside my mouth, and began to chew. They fought to grind my bite instead, until a tooth brake, and I cried out unto the Lord by reason of this, my broken tooth. But the Lord did not answer me. So I swallowed hard and was thereafter to be sick for many days. I could not eat anything else also because of the heaviness in my stomach and the travail within my bowels.
Then the Lord returned to examine me, know you what these things mean, Son of Man? And I said, help me, O Lord, I believe so. And God said, these are the attitudes which be of men.
Yes, Master, I did eat the meat of the kine which was moist and good, and was contented with it, but afterward I could not recall my joy, except from day to day. These are they of longly lives, and easy lives, well accommodated to this world. While the bitter herbs of the garden were to represent they of a brief and troublous existence; nevertheless it does preserve their souls. Finally, they must be those who obtain no sustenance whatsoever, who break their teeth upon sin; neither will they be satiated in death.
Chapter 3
See, these be thy people,
who will not leave their sores alone,
but pick at them, and pick at ‘em, and pick at ‘em,
such that they defy healing.
The waters from your oceans of wickedness vaporize,
and rise up unto my holy abode.
The clouds of heaven are saturated with your odors:
let us rain down these sins upon their evil heads.
I will bestow a blessing toward my first coming;
I will bestow a blessing toward my second coming;
the third time I will make absolution of all shunned blessings.
I will make you a sacrifice once;
I will make you a sacrifice twice;
the third time I will make you the sacrifice.
I will ask for rent a first time;
I will ask for rent a second time;
the third time I will issue all tenants out.
The third child of a third child, a third child;
whose yet growing up in a home without books
has become himself written.
But if all things were country fairs and park picnics,
I should not have come, nor been sent.
He is a Solomon: conceived in aftersin.
He is a Jacob: the lesser of two sons;
as well as he is a Job: whose face is washed,
and whose clothes are clean,
yet underneath he stinks with the smell of festering sores and punctured boils.
A universe to declare!
Wrongs never to be righted,
injustices never rectified,
the haughty never brought low –
for my mouth is sewn shut with disfavor and bonded in shame.
O man, thou art a child still at many years and at full measure.
Thou art forever just two months this side normal.
Thou art all vanity, and all of your works are futile labor.
Therefore, don your cloak,
which is a vision in shroud;
and let your meat be after the captivity.
Perhaps the Lord will yet have mercy on you.
The Son of God shall liken the Sun of Light.
He came into this world like a light shining in the darkness,
but the world accepted him not.
Yet the moon has glory reflected … well to be prophet of the tides.
A Sunday, and evil appears only as a shadow caught by the light;
A Sunday passed,
and goodness is just a candle in the dispensary of night.
Three pieces of dust
explaining to another piece of dust
the nature of God.
The Ancients have proclaimed it – to see God is to die!
And so you must – dispense your self.
That not just the wicked act as surety for the good – also
the wickedness within.
I bring no new order.
You have the Law and the prophets; you have your savior.
What more do you need except the Spirit to use them?
They talk to clouds; they hope, diminished of a faith.
They pray. When finally windows open …
pressure fronts should be shown respect?
Thereby cures are lost.
An end, an end is framed on a house built for termites.
Since you will not live the truth,
I have left you to live a lie.
I am the Standard.
By me all things are judged:
I am the least in the kingdom of God;
he that is not reckoned even of me
is deemed unworthy of heaven.
“This man is a lunatic!”
‘You are not far wrong.’
Rightly say ye, the Holy ‘Ghost’ of God;
for whosoever claims to have seen his mercy or felt his presence
has seen or felt an ‘unreal’ thing.
Chapter 4
Come to me as cubs of the mother wolf –
I will rear the rejected, give shelter to the castaway;
on rosemilk I will start a new nation.
On pets flow rivers of affection,
while everywhere the dry tongues of children.
Though you praise the breast-feeder
and are wont to glorify the feminine,
I am not satisfied with maternity.
It shall please the Lord to discard the cardholder,
to refrain the flitting skirt,
to stretch straight the natural off-spring.
Blessed are the barren,
and the wombs that never bare,
and the paps which never gave suck!
You shall not boil a kid in its mother’s milk.
After murdering the present (from God),
did you think you would take possession of the future?
For her who has ceased to service God’s system,
the Lord will cease to service the inspiration of your soul.
To him, you announce your vows before mine holy altar
and the law requires I call he that forsakes my covenant dead,
and she that is divorced your widow.
Amuse not yourself with musing, by faith act, by reason react.
The gift despised in practice is also lost to theory.
You fools, you who watch kingdoms fall,
societies fail, marriages dissolve, yet say,
such things are foreign, the sordid concerns of the morally inferior.
O for a worthy prophet:
they are all of them drunk,
and speak not for me.
“Me and the good Lord conversing in the night …”
in rounds of winebibbing and good-timing.
Woe unto them!
Has Truth a place here?
Is there space for him in your inn,
or are all your rooms taken up with your prejudice?
In ignorance the liberal self has broadcast,
I will not compromise – it is either my way or the highway.
The Lord says, it is I who create the highway,
it is I who either bids or forbids entrance thereon.
What ‘way’ have you except that which leads to death and damnation?
Such is the chosen path for all and country.
Later on, some followers sought to ask the prophet,
“But how can we know the way of the Lord?
Is it by suffering, hard work, or good deeds;” while others said,
“just accept Jesus as Lord and receive his grace?”
‘The way is one of life-altering change and righteous rendering –
a flagellation of the mind toward a crucified self;
but afterward a resurrection flowing with the spirit.’
Moses also, let him speak.
Answer, answer, answer me.
Answer is to anticipate goodness:
before cavity, before shrinkage, before fading away with dullish wit.
“What do you call yourself?”
Shall any man know what to call himself until the Lord gives him a name?
While I live, I balance full,
and no spirit can with liberty enter.
Afterward someone asked,
“previous prophets had many devotees and disciples,
often following them on their spiritual missions; whereas you have none.”
Only a king is in need of a royal escort and an entourage.
If by chance I should start a movement,
then I shall have begotten nothing;
or encourage a fashion,
then I shall be walking naked;
or inspire disciples,
then I would still be alone.
What begins here is more than men,
for it is more than Man.
My life is a parable to read, my hand a divider;
my leaving a removal of stop gaps and fingers in the dike.
The genie is out!
From step to canter,
from canter to gallop,
from gallop to a full sprint: the loosened chariot is without a driver.
“You keep saying, the prophet says this,
the prophet says that; which prophet?”
Any and all.
Everything I tell you has already been written before,
so no one may say, ‘what new thing is this from God?’
The oracle’s wish is fulfilled,
who by looking into tomorrow
causes the future to resemble the past.
Yet is truth sworn only to him.
He that wrote the law …
I AM not suspended under the law;
consequently to bring to it his own interpretation –
so as to repossess those things which rightfully belong to the Lord.
