Whose Son Is He?

While the Pharisees were gathered together, Jesus asked them, “What do you think about the Messiah? Whose son is he?” “The son of David,” they replied. He said to them, “How is it then that David, speaking by the Spirit, calls him ‘Lord’? For he says, “‘The Lord said to my Lord: “Sit at my right hand until I put your enemies under your feet.” ’If then David calls him ‘Lord,’ how can he be his son?” No one could say a word in reply, and from that day on no one dared to ask him any more questions. Matthew 22:41-46 NIV

It is now Jesus’ turn to question the Pharisees. They certainly posed enough questions to Him. The first question they can quickly answer, by saying that Messiah is the son of David, meaning of the lineage of the house of David. However, when Jesus poses the second question to them, quoting Psalm 110:1, they were stumped, having no answer for Him.

In His conversations with the Jewish leaders, Jesus said much which would have provided these leaders a chance to truly come to Him, yet, they chose just the opposite. They chose to find fault with all He said, and to eventually have Him crucified.

Now, who do you say the Messiah is son to? Jesus, in humanity, is of the lineage of David, it is true. But, much more importantly, in deity, He is the only Son of God. He is our Savior and redeemer, sent by a loving Father, that we might be reconciled to the Father through the Son.
