"My heart overflows with a good theme; I address my verses to the King; My tongue is the pen of a ready writer. You are fairer than the sons of men; Grace is poured upon Your lips; Therefore God has blessed You forever. Gird Your sword on Your thigh, O Mighty One, In Your splendor and Your majesty! And in Your majesty ride on victoriously, For the cause of truth and meekness and righteousness; Let Your right hand teach You awesome things. Your arrows are sharp; The peoples fall under You; Your arrows are in the heart of the King's enemies. Your throne, O God, is forever and ever; A scepter of uprightness is the scepter of Your kingdom. You have loved righteousness and hated wickedness; Therefore God, Your God, has anointed You With the oil of joy above Your fellows. All Your garments are fragrant with myrrh and aloes and cassia; Out of ivory palaces stringed instruments have made You glad. Kings' daughters are among Your noble ladies; At Your right hand stands the queen in gold from Ophir. Listen, O daughter, give attention and incline your ear: Forget your people and your father's house; Then the King will desire your beauty. Because He is your Lord, bow down to Him. The daughter of Tyre will come with a gift; The rich among the people will seek your favor. The King's daughter is all glorious within; Her clothing is interwoven with gold. She will be led to the King in embroidered work; The virgins, her companions who follow her, Will be brought to You. They will be led forth with gladness and rejoicing; They will enter into the King's palace. In place of your fathers will be your sons; You shall make them princes in all the earth. I will cause Your name to be remembered in all generations; Therefore the peoples will give You thanks forever and ever." (Psalm 45:1-17)
As we look at Psalm 45 let me say that I hope and pray that each of us here today attends this wedding. For by the notation at the beginning of this Psalm we read “A Song Celebrating the Kings Marriage.” It is important to recognize by its description that this wedding is a Royal Wedding. It was written by the sons of Korah and may possibly be the description of a marriage in the dynasty of King David to a foreign Princes.
Oh, the excitement of a marriage. The bride is dressed in a most beautiful gown, the room is filled with the sweet smell of flowers all over the place. The groom is standing waiting for the entrance of the bride with the father waiting in the wings. There is a great sense of expectancy that fills the air as this day has been promised for so long a time. Now that day has arrived and happiness and joy have filled the hearts of all who are present. The musicians are playing the soft music of love while the choir sings their hymn of praise. Not only have all gathered to celebrate a most astonishing event in time that shall always be remembered but also an event that will bring joy in the bonding of love for the bride and the groom for all time that is yet to come.
Let us pause for a moment to reflect on the character of our God. God is love and He is just and all mighty. He is the Creator who made all that there is and will ever be. He hung the stars in the heavens and maintains their course as they travel the universe. He is not a Creator that left His creation behind but is involved with every detail down to the uniqueness of each and every snowflake, each and every human being that has been born into this world and those that shall follow. God loves us each and every one without partiality. He loves each of us so much that He gave His only begotten Son to reconcile us to God through His blood and righteousness. Let this truth in knowledge fill you this day with peace as we look at the words of this Psalm written by the Spirit of God.
It is interesting to look at the poet’s purpose for writing this Psalm in verses 1 and 17. His heart is overwhelmed at the prospect of attending this marriage. He wants to express his anticipation and joy of this day to his king. In order to do so, the words of his mouth have become the pen to translate his joy to his master. The poet also testifies that his love for the king will cause him to make the king's name know throughout all the generations to come. It is for this purpose that they shall all forever more give praise to the king.
Then in verses 2-9, the poet turns to the attributes of the king to which this Psalm is addressed. The king is fairer than the sons of men for His heart is not defiled by the depravity of this world and is pure and righteous as the faithful and true One from the Kingdom to come. As King Solomon wrote, "My beloved is dazzling and ruddy, Outstanding among ten thousand. "His head is like gold, pure gold; His locks are like clusters of dates And black as a raven. "His eyes are like doves Beside streams of water, Bathed in milk, And reposed in their setting. "His cheeks are like a bed of balsam, Banks of sweet-scented herbs; His lips are lilies Dripping with liquid myrrh. "His hands are rods of gold Set with beryl; His abdomen is carved ivory Inlaid with sapphires. "His legs are pillars of alabaster Set on pedestals of pure gold; His appearance is like Lebanon Choice as the cedars. "His mouth is full of sweetness. And he is wholly desirable. This is my beloved and this is my friend, O daughters of Jerusalem." (Song of Solomon 5:10-16) The King is Grace as the Apostle John wrote, "For the Law was given through Moses; grace and truth were realized through Jesus Christ." (John 1:17)
The King is a warrior who wears His sword ready to defeat all the enemies of His bride. His word is the power of the universe and can discern all wickedness within the heart of men. "For the word of God is living and active and sharper than any two-edged sword, and piercing as far as the division of soul and spirit, of both joints and marrow, and able to judge the thoughts and intentions of the heart." (Hebrews 4:12) The King ever marches on victoriously for the cause of truth in humility standing righteous before the Father. The King’s arrows are sharp and the enemies of His Kingdom bow before Him.
We find in verses 6-7 that the King in this Psalm is not an earthly King as He is addressed as God who sits upon His throne forever. He holds in His hand the scepter of righteousness which is not of the kingdom of the earth but of the Kingdom of God in heaven. His love is righteousness and His hate is towards wickedness. Therefore God, His Father and His God had anointed Him above all others.
We see here that this is not the marriage of a king in the earthly dynasty of King David but the marriage of the heir of King David who shall rule everlasting. The King of kings and Lord of lords, Jesus Christ, the Son of God and our Savior. This is the marriage that we all have been waiting for, that we all have been preparing for, the marriage of our King Jesus with His bride.
And who is the bride, we look to verses 10-15 to see. First, the poet calls to the bride to give attention to his words. The bride is to forget the people of her father’s house, as she is now subject to the husband, who is her King. As the Apostle Paul writes, "For the husband is the head of the wife, as Christ also is the head of the church, He Himself being the Savior of the body." (Ephesians 5:23) The King will desire her beauty as He has given Himself for her. Because on this day she stands in her resurrected body filled with the beauty of her soul in the righteousness of her King. He is the Lord of His bride and she shall bow before Him in the humility of her love for the King.
In Exodus 39:2-3 we see the Priest’s ephod was made with gold and woven together with gold threads. In the same way the Bride of Christ, His Holy Priesthood shall be adorned on the marriage day of the King. The Bride shall be attired beyond any worldly fashion that she had been accustomed to as we read. "I also clothed you with embroidered cloth and put sandals of porpoise skin on your feet; and I wrapped you with fine linen and covered you with silk." (Ezekiel 16:10) It is then that the Bride shall be led into the place that has been prepared as promised. "In My Father's house are many dwelling places; if it were not so, I would have told you; for I go to prepare a place for you." (John 14:2)
As followers of Jesus Christ we are His Church, and as His Church, we are the Bride of Christ. "That He might present to Himself the church in all her glory, having no spot or wrinkle or any such thing; but that she would be holy and blameless." (Ephesians 5:27) Are you ready? Do you keep a good watch as we do not know the hour that He comes to take His Bride home? Are you following Him in faith and keeping your lamp filled with oil? Do not miss the celebration of your wedding day to the King. What a glorious day that will be! "Let us rejoice and be glad and give the glory to Him, for the marriage of the Lamb has come and His bride has made herself ready." It was given to her to clothe herself in fine linen, bright and clean; for the fine linen is the righteous acts of the saints. Then he said to me, "Write, 'Blessed are those who are invited to the marriage supper of the Lamb.'" And he said to me, "These are true words of God." (Revelation 19:7-9)
