I have been considering how the checking-the boxes variety of Christianity flies right in face of and is so contrary to walking in the Spirit with Jesus. Here is what I mean by checking the boxes. For example, I'll talk to that person over there about Jesus. Good, now that went fairly well, and I've shared about Christ with someone today, because I like to do that at least once daily. Well, with that being done, I can " check off the box" and relax a little more and breathe a sigh of relief. Really? It's a kind of do your good deed for the day mentality. But that is all wrong and more about the duty of religion than the spirituality of a moment by moment relationship with God. Or I say my prayers in the morning and check off that box and then go about my business for the day. I read my chapter or so in Scripture and mechanically check off that box. But what if the Holy Spirit wants to lead me back to His Word later in the day, or prompts me to intercede for someone, or leads me to talk with another person about salvation? Am I even available and alert to His leading in my perfunctory mindset of having "fulfilled that requirement" already today?
I don't by this mean to knock the spiritual disciplines of prayer, personal evangelism or Bible reading, but, if we are not careful they can subtly morph and become for us a law in their own right, and that way we forfeit the benefit and support they are intended to be and lose the adventure of walking with the living God, the adventure we knew and experienced at the beginning and in the "honeymoon" of our relationship.
"O foolish Galatians who has bewitched you....... Having begun in the Spirit are you now being made perfect by the flesh?" Galatians 3 v1-4.
"....you have left your first love, remember therefore from where you have fallen..." Rev 2 v4-5
