Bobby spotted Silky the cat sleeping under  the hedge. He ran over and pulled her out by picking  her up roughly. She didn’t like it, and hissed at him,  wagging her tail . Betty tried to pat her head while  Bobby was holding her, but Silky made a swipe at her with her paw.

“Put her down Bobby,” Betty said, “Silky doesn’t like it!”  Bobby let her drop down on the ground, and Silky stood there looking angry.  She twitched her tail, and walked away. Cats have feelings too, and they don’t always want to play. Betty and Bobby had to learn not to wake the cat up when she was asleep.

Bobby went over to the trampoline. He climbed up onto it and started to jump up

and down. “Me too”, cried Betty, “I want to get up!”

“No”, said Bobby “We are only to be one at a time”.

“No”, said Betty again crossly, “Let me get up too”.

“You might get hurt with me jumping”, said Bobby.

But Betty took no notice and started to climb up. Bobby kept on jumping, and soon Betty was jumping  with him. What a lot of fun it was! But then Bobby took an extra high jump and lost his balance. He fell over on top of Betty, and she hurt her leg. She started crying at the top of her voice. Mummy came running outside to see what had happened.

“Bobby, what have you done to Betty?” she called.

“I didn’t do anything Mummy”, said Bobby, “I told her not to get up and she did, and I fell on top of her”.

“Betty, you know you are not to get on the trampoline when Bobby is on it”, said Mummy as she picked Betty up, “And now you have been hurt”.

Mummy kept on talking, “I  didn’t make that rule to spoil your fun. I made that rule to keep you from being hurt.”

She gave Betty a big kiss where it hurt. “Bobby, you did the right thing telling Betty she wasn’t  to get up on the trampoline. But now, lunch is ready so come inside to have it”.

Betty had learned another lesson. The rules that Mummy made were the best after all, as they stopped her from being hurt.
