Sabbath 4/7/18 Seventh Day Baptist Edgewater Pastor Keith sermon “The Godless Man” Hebrews 12:14-17

There was a man who filled his tank with gas and as he drove away, he realized that he left his gas cap on top of car. He saw that it was lost but he thought that other people may have lost their gas caps too so he drove back to the gas station to see. He found a gas cap that fit and he happily told his wife that this gas cap was better than the one he lost. He said it was a locking gas cap. Unfortunately since he didn’t have the key to unlock this gas cap that he found, he was worse off than before. Like this man, Esau lost his gas cap.

In the scriptures, Esau left the God of his fathers and went to being a godless man. He had earlier lost his blessing by selling his birthright. Esau is never mentioned in the lineage of the children of Israel. Esau was a land man and went out hunting animals. Jacob was more of a momma’s boy. When Jacob was cooking, Esau gave him his birthright for some food. Esau despised his birthright as the eldest and didn’t receive his rights as the executor of the inheritance from Isaac. The older brother would normally get twice as much as the younger brother. Esau gave this up and he did what he did because he was a godless man. He turned his back on his inheritance because he turned his back on God.

The scriptures show that he was a good son. This is because when asked by his father, Esau went to go hunt some food for his father Isaac.  Esau was also a forgiving brother because he forgave Jacob for what he did. Scripture says that they buried Isaac together. Anyone can be a good person but still be a godless man or woman. Esau was a godless man. He never built any altars to God and never prayed to God. Esau was godless and robbed himself of all the blessing that God wanted to give him. Esau rejected God. He thought because he was a “man’s man” and a hunter, that he didn’t need God. A godless man has no hope.

Once we come to Jesus Christ, we have hope and the promises of Psalm 23. “The Lord is our shepherd and we shall not want”. The Lord will protect us and give us goodness and mercy all the days of our lives. We will dwell in the house of the Lord forever!  We should stop trying to carry the world on our shoulders. Let Jesus hold the world for us by giving our life and our world to the Lord. As we walk and live our lives that honor Him, we can look forward to the inheritance that He has for us. We want to continue to look to God and Jesus for our answers.
