     To some, the details pertaining to the essence of Christ is a myth. The thought of one man who was also God entering the world and bringing eternal life to all humanity through death is not only implausible, to many, it’s also foolish. But to those who follow Christ, it’s the very pinnacle of all that it means to be a Christian. 

     Jesus came into a dying world to save the lost. That much is clear. That much is true. And that much, at least among Christians, is undisputed. But what about before Jesus came into the world. Did he exist? Did he take part in the creation or was he also the created? These questions and many more are debated and often the cause of division among many believers as to the divinity or “lack there of” of Christ. Was Jesus God? If not, then who exactly is he? And if he is God, then who is God? This line of thinking centers what is known as the Trinity, the view that God is one God, but manifests Himself in three forms of existence, Father, Son, and Holy Spirit. All three being equal and unified, yet distinct in character and personality. The fact that we can’t comprehend the “how” in this does not negate its truth. 

Human Comprehension Has Its Limits

     1 Corinthians 2:7 states, “but we speak God’s wisdom in a mystery, the hidden wisdom which God predestined before the ages of our glory.” So according to this verse, God planned for wisdom about Himself to be hidden and when finally known to be mysterious, difficult to explain or understand. That may beg the question, “Why?” Why would He do this? Well, that in itself may be a mystery. But God has declared that He alone is the revealer of mysteries. 

     Daniel 2:22 declares, “It is he who reveals the profound and hidden things; he knows what is in the darkness, And the light dwells with Him.” We can’t fathom God. We can’t measure God. Our greatest imagination could never come close to an accurate depiction of the God. (Job 11:7-12). But we can earnestly ask, seek, and believe because we know that God does reveal and what He doesn’t we must take Him at His word and trust anyway. Remember His ways and thoughts are not as our own (Isaiah 55:8-9). So before dismissing what may be hard to understand, give God a chance to reveal Himself to you in a way that you’ll understand. 

The Pre-Existence of Christ

So did Jesus exist before he was born? The bible declares so. 

John 17:5 “And now, O Father, glorify me in your presence with the glory I had with you before the world began.”

John 6:51 “I am the living bread, which came down from heaven…”

John 6:38 “For I came down from heaven, not to do my own will but the will of him who sent me.”

John 8:23 “And he said to them, ‘Ye are from beneath: I am from above: ye are from this world. I am not of this world.’”

“I tell you the truth,” Jesus answered, “before Abraham was born, I am!“

Christ The Creator

     While it may be known to many that Christ pre-existed, what may not be is that Christ is also our Creator. It’s interesting how Moses’ account of creation in Genesis and the account in John differ as to the author behind creation. Genesis 1:1 declares that “In the beginning, God created the heavens and the earth.” John 1 begins by stating that the Word became flesh and was with God and that “through Him all things were made; without him, nothing was made that has been made.” 

     The first chapter of Hebrews states, “but in these last days he has spoken to us by his Son, whom he appointed heir of all things, and through whom he made the universe” (Heb 1:2) 

     Additionally, the first chapter of Colossians reads, Colossians 1:15-16
“For by Him all things were created that are in heaven and that are on earth, visible and invisible, whether thrones or dominions or principalities or powers. All things were created through Him and for Him.” (Colossians 1:15-16). 

     Jude further states:
to the only God our Savior be glory, majesty, power and authority, through Jesus Christ our Lord, before all ages, now and forevermore! Amen. (Jude 1:25)

     So if Jesus existed before anything did and if He’s the creator of everything then does that make him equal with God? 

     “Who being in the form of God, thought it not robbery to be equal with God.” (Phil 2:6). What can be equal to God without being God? Jesus is not declared King of Kings and Lord of Lords (Rev. 19:16) because as was man without sin whose love rescued us from depths of hell (though this is true). But it is primarily because he is the fullness of God dwelling in a bodily form (Col 2:9), the same yesterday, today, and forever (Heb 13:8), the Alpha and Omega (Rev. 12-13. 16), and certainly Lord of all (Acts 10:36).
