To have fought A good fight means merely to have done your best win or lose, no matter the outcome and to be able to hold one’s head high with nothing to be ashamed of in one’s effort. There are many good fights in which one can be engaged today and over a lifetime. But to have fought THE good fight as Paul expressed it in 2 Timothy 4 v.17 means not only that the effort was wholehearted but also that the victory is guaranteed and assured and that the rewards and consequences are eternal. The stakes of THE good fight are the highest stakes of all good fights, for the eternal destinies of human beings weigh in the balance. This fight cannot be fought without faith and without the Blessed Hope of Christ’s soon return to make all things right and settle all scores. This fight cannot be fought either without a love of His appearing. So these three are crucially and intimately involved: faith hope and love.
