Why Do Bad Things Happen to Good People? 

     This is a question that has plagued humankind for a very long time. A question of the ages but one that is actually easy to answer if we dig enough into the word of God. Actually, the question is wrong it shouldn't be why do bad things happen to good people because there are no good people. In Luke 18:19 Jesus tells us that no one is good but God. A little note on this one. This is the verse that got me saved back in 2003. I was very distraught and didn't know where to turn to. I thought God only wanted and loved good people and I knew I was not good by any chance so I didn't believe that God would want me. A preacher I talked to asked me if I would like to come to know Jesus. I said why God only wants good people. That's when he showed me this verse. It actually saved me. I accepted Jesus as my Lord and Savior off of this verse alone. In Romans, Paul tells us that there are no righteous and that all have turned away. So here, wouldn't the real question be Why Do Bad Things Happen to Christians? Remember when we came to Christ and accepted him with all our heart, mind, and soul, we have been crucified to the world. Jesus says in John 15:19 If we still belonged to the world it would love us as one of its own. But we do not belong to the world, we belong now to God since Jesus has chosen us out of the world so that is why the world hates us. Remember the world hated him first. And now that we follow Jesus the world hates us too. The world has no reason to hate its own. If you look closely you will see that the majority of the bad stuff that happens to those still of the world are self-inflicted by their own self-motivation.

     But what about Christians? Someone who has come to Christ and repented and has done no wrong to anyone, someone who has their head straight and bad things happen to them? We can not serve two masters. We can not serve the world and God. So we chose God, that is why the world hate us cause we are no longer a part of the world. If we were it would still love us but we betrayed the world and its ways, praise be to God. We are told that we will have trials and tribulations that we will go through. God did not promise us a rose garden. It is due to the choice we made and I will say that I do not regret choosing Jesus. But why does God put us through all the trials? Well, he doesn't. James 1:13 says that “When tempted, no one should say, “God is tempting me.” For God cannot be tempted by evil, nor does he tempt anyone.” Why would God, your loving Father put stumbling blocks in your path? Does that sound like a loving God to you? He doesn't do that. It is impossible for God to do evil. Remember that he loves us so much that he sacrificed his only son for to save us. How can any evil come from someone like that?

     Trials and tribulations are there for us to grow in faith. It gives us perseverance. As we get through a particular problem our faith in God grows knowing that he is there for us. So next time a trial happens our faith is a little stronger to stand to know that we will get through it too. We shall persevere. And so on and so on till our faith is very strong that no matter what comes our way we know that we will see it through because God promised that he would never leave us or forsake us. And I have been through some pretty tough times to know that is true. Just because we cant feel him at times does not mean he isn't there. Human feelings betray us. Jesus is much more than just a “feeling.” Don't feel, just know that he is there is enough. We are to consider it pure joy when we face trials since we know that our faith shall see us through and that it will be for his glory that we shall prevail.

     There is no reason to fear our trials. No reason to try and run from them. 1 Corinthians 16:13 tells us specifically to “Be on your guard; stand firm in the faith, be courageous; be strong.” Remember your faith, don't doubt. In the midst of your own personal storm don't take your eyes off Jesus and step upon those waves bravely. By the power of Jesus through the Holy Spirit, you have been given the power of faith to calm that storm. This is what I do when trouble hits. Look at the issue or issues surrounding you. Write down on a piece of paper and list everything that is bothering you, all the issues that is causing your personal storm. Now make two columns. Name one side things I can take care off and the other side name it things I can not take care of. Now from that list, you created to put those in the appropriate column. If you have anything in the I can take care of list then do so. Take care of them. If you have anything in the things I can not take care of side then pray and leave them in Jesus' hands and forget them. No literally forget that they even exist. You cant do anything about them anyway so let God handle them for you and go about your business. I know that will be hard to let go at first since we have a natural need to keep everything under our own control but with a payer, we will succeed by and through the grace of God.
