“Be careful not to practice your righteousness in front of others to be seen by them. If you do, you will have no reward from your Father in heaven. “So when you give to the needy, do not announce it with trumpets, as the hypocrites do in the synagogues and on the streets, to be honored by others. Truly I tell you, they have received their reward in full. But when you give to the needy, do not let your left hand know what your right hand is doing, so that your giving may be in secret. Then your Father, who sees what is done in secret, will reward you. Matthew 6:1-4 NIV

God is righteous. Man, of his own is not. The one who does what is righteous in the eyes of the Lord, does so through the indwelling of the Holy Spirit. We are not to make a spectacle of our righteous deeds. Remember from the Beatitudes, those who hunger and thirst after righteousness shall be filled. This filling is not of the accolades of man. What can this provide of value to us? Nothing, in God’s eyes. If we seek the recognition of man for our good works, that is all we shall receive. That which you do in righteousness before God, do so without thought of being seen by man. Your deeds are done to be pleasing to God, and not for recognition by man.
