Gui Cheng had just spent another full day teaching kung fu to a group of young people at his academy, Beijing Kung Fu Academy. He was exhausted and couldn't wait to get home to his Malibu beach house that he lived in with his beautiful wife, Kennedie, who made and sold crafts and jewelry. He knew exactly what he would be getting home to--a warm hug and a kiss, a foot massage and a bucket of warm water for his feet, a lovely dinner, you name it. The closer he got to his house, the bigger his smile got.
When Gui got inside the door and set his bag down, Kennedie came into the living room and threw her arms around his neck. "Hi, honey," she said. "How was your day?"
After he kissed her on the lips, Gui took her hands and led her to the couch. "Exhausting and stressful yet fun," he sighed. "I love my job and I love my students and I love that God is using me to teach them to protect themselves. I'm glad He put it on my heart to do this after we found out just how out of control the problem with bullying was, but it sure is a lot of work! I spend seven days a week working out to prepare to teach my students, and then I work out more when I actually go and teach. I get so...exhausted!"
"Poor baby. I know how you feel," Kennedie said, massaging his back.
Gui rubbed her leg and chuckled a little. "How would you know? Making crafts doesn't require excruciatingly strenuous workouts!"
Kennedie laughed, too. "Well, no, but it involves making lots of crafts and jewelry a week and then getting up early to go to street fairs!" she exclaimed.
Gui leaned his head back on the couch, and Kennedie put her arms around him and snuggled close. She saw her husband's eyes were on the picture of his parents and brother, Li, that were on their mantle. He looked at that picture a lot, and she knew exactly why. "Gui, honey, just keep praying for them," she said, trying to be encouraging. "I'm sure God will change their hearts."
Gui turned and looked at her. "I know, but it hurts so much. I miss them so much. I didn't do anything wrong, and they treat me like a stranger. It makes me angry, too. So what if I didn't marry a Chinese lady? So what if you're not Chinese? You're the best thing that's ever happened to me since I received Jesus! Receiving Jesus is the best thing that ever happened to me! Can't they see that Jesus gives me a peace that I never got with Buddha? I tried to tell them all the good Jesus has done for me, and they won't listen! So what if I don't want to take over Dad's business after he dies? Everything that happened in my life that has given me joy and happiness all happened when I was at Pepperdine University--receiving Jesus after going to that college Bible study with Derek Glennwood when he invited me to be his friend when I was lonely and homesick for Beijing, meeting you and marrying you after we graduated, and now having a career I love! The best years of my life came after I moved to the States, and Mom and Dad act like I'm some kind of jerk because of it! They accused me of
Kennedie sighed sympathetically. "Jesus said the world hated Him first. Even His own rejected Him, including His own brother, James, but James came around and became a believer. I trust that He will change the hearts of my in-laws, too," she said. "We'll just keep praying."
