MAY YOU REST IN PEACE, FAKE NEWS

"But false prophets also arose among the people, just as there will be false teachers among you, who will secretly bring in destructive heresies, even denying the Master who bought them, bringing upon themselves swift destruction.  And many will follow their sensuality, and because of them the way of truth will be blasphemed.  And in their greed they will exploit you with false words. Their condemnation from long ago is not idle, and their destruction is not asleep." (2 Peter 2:1-3)

I recently had a rather strange dream. It was all about the current trend of alleged  "Fake News," one of our modern day cultures new apparent disputable methods of  the reporting of current events.  An unusual dream, you might say, and you are probably right. Just another revealing of our current communal state of mind, I guess. (Proverbs 10:9)

Definition - "Fake news is made-up nonsense delivered for financial gain, political power or influence. Most fake news sites deliberately pass themselves off as real, offering false and sensational stories to lure traffic. Stories spread misinformation like wildfire through social media, so think before you click." (PremierChristanity.com)

I can't remember the exact premise of this dream, but it seemed to center around the preponderance of fake news. How would this phenomenon end up influencing the populace?  How it would eventually meet its demise?

One issue of this dream that I do remember however, was the narrative surrounding the question and answer session. This gathering of information was seemly geared to persuade me as to how I might do my part in inoculating the populace against fake news. Some of the questions asked were, What is fake news? Do you believe in fake news? And how may, "We, the People" help prevent this alleged manifest of unverified information?

And the all-important question facing fake news was its future as far as the public's influence is concerned. When will fake news meet its demise? How will it be remembered?   What will be its epitaph? What will the inscription on its tomb or gravestone be in memory of?

Then the dream continued its all-important narrative.  You see, its epitaph will most certainly be its last words to the world. And these words will be literally etched in the stone of life's progression. So how will history prove these words? Will history overcome its untruths, or will history thrive on its demands? Only time will tell.

So while in the stupor of my dream trance, and while I was still alert to this dream's aftermath, I was given an epitaph in poetry. 

Rest In Peace, reads your memory stone
Now that you are removed from the throne
Rest In Peace, reads your memory stone
For your falsehoods you will now atone
Rest In Peace, reads your memory stone
Now your evil deeds have all been sown
Rest In Peace, reads your memory stone
Now that your cover has surely been blown
Rest In Peace, reads your memory stone
No longer to the truth will you ever moan
Rest In peace, reads your memory stone
Your talking points they will never clown
Rest In Peace, reads your memory stone
To our freedom you will no more grown
Rest In Peace, reads your memory stone.
Sorry you never had a liberty backbone
Rest In Peace, reads your memory stone
Your news reports never again are shown
Rest In Peace.

Consequently, in the future if you happen to come across this extensive epitaph in prose, somewhere in society's long-forgotten progressive graveyard, covered over in nature's weeds, just stop, take a deep breath and whisper a little prayer thanking God for its demise, and for your survival. (Proverbs 26:23-24) 

In conclusion, a most uncanny dream you might surmise. Could  this dream in actuality be fake ? Could this dream in reality have an effect ? Only time may tell. Nonetheless, maybe, just maybe, it will cause a thinking cap to be worn. (Proverbs 16:7)

How should we Christians handle fake news? (1 Cor 13:5) The following excerpt is taken from (PremierChristianity.com) 

Longing for truth

"Most Christians would say that truth is an important part of their faith. In John’s Gospel, Jesus says He is the truth (John 14:6) and tells the Jews who believed in Him, “If you hold to My teaching, you are really My disciples. Then you will know the truth, and the truth will set you free.” (John 8:31-32).

Paul also urges the Philippians to strive for the truth: “Finally, brothers and sisters, whatever is true, whatever is noble, whatever is right, whatever is pure, whatever is lovely, whatever is admirable – if anything is excellent or praiseworthy – think about such things” (Philippians 4:8). And to the Corinthians he says: “Love does not delight in evil but rejoices with the truth” ( 1 Cor 13:6).

Of course, if you asked several Christians from diverse backgrounds about their version of truth, you could receive very different replies. Anyone spending ten minutes on social media sites in the past couple of months will have seen Christians arguing about all kinds of issues, not least those relating to the LGBT community.

Natalie Collins, 2016 National Sermon of the Year winner, recently wrote that “we wrestle with the challenges of being a people united by the truth of Jesus in a world where universal truth is rejected.” She also points to a lack of critical engagement with culture, saying that for her the ideal is “not just to take things on face value but to give a robust rationale for why we think like we do.”   

In conclusion, simply go back to the Word of God for His instruction. (2 Timothy 3:16-17)

And if you are still in a state of confusion, simply talk with Him, your all-powerful, all-knowing Creator, who wants to talk with you. (Psalm 27:8). Amen!
