Marrying the Boss

"In that day", declares the Lord, "you will call me 'my husband'; you will no longer call me 'my master'." Hosea 2:16

If we were to work for someone who owned their own business, we would work for a wage. We would have obligations, duties and a responsibility to our employer. There would be rules and guidelines to follow. We would not expect a share of the profits.

On the other hand if we were married to the boss and working with them, our whole attitude would be different, even though we may be doing exactly the same things. No longer would we see our work as an obligation, a duty or a responsibility. Our work ethic would be stronger because we know we have a future together.

The good news of the gospel is—we will marry the boss! In Ephesians 5:25-33 and Revelation 19:7-8 & 21:9, we are told that the Church is the bride of Christ, "the wife of the Lamb". From God's perspective, all of God's people are as special as a dearly loved bride. We also have, as God's people, an inheritance (a share in the profits!) since we have been sealed with the Holy Spirit "who is a deposit guaranteeing our inheritance" (Ephesians 1:14).

Therefore we live like engaged people not expecting a salary, but anticipating an inheritance. We are happy to be betrothed to our beloved and eager to learn what pleases him. We want to spend time with our future spouse, not for what he gives us, but simply for his presence.

What an amazing privilege, to be "betrothed" to a wealthy, loving "boss."
