For we have not received a spirit of bondage to slip back into fear, but (instead) we have received the Spirit of adoption as sons by whom we cry (same word “cry” used of Jesus on the cross at His last breath) “Abba! Father!” (see Romans 8, v.15) From this we can glean that the antidote to living in fear is to cry out inwardly or outwardly as often as necessary to our heavenly Daddy in whom rests our continual deliverance.
If we are not drawing near to Him, we will be drifting away (“slipping back”) from Him. (Hebrews 2, v1) It is a continual choosing that is required of us. It is not that we intend to drift away or slip back any more than the captain of a ship intends to drift off course, but there are currents at work in the spiritual realm as in the natural realm, currents that are only too happy to carry us away from our desired destination.
