The High Priestly Garment

In the Old Testament book of Numbers beginning with verse 24 we read about how the high priest Aaron, Moses’ brother, was forbidden (as his brother Moses would later be; Numbers 20 v.12)) to enter the Promised Land because of the rebellion at the waters of Meribah. The LORD Yahweh commanded that Aaron be stripped of his high priestly garment and that his son Eleazer be clothed in that high priestly office and garment in his stead. At least Aaron had the consolation of seeing his son receive the high priesthood and the holy garment immediately before he died.  That was one of the very last visual images stamped on his retina.   As soon as the garment was removed from Aaron, he died. What a picture of our own condition as New Testament believers! Without the garment of Jesus Christ’s perfect righteousness we would be dead in our sins! For we have no acceptable righteousness of our own, we are totally dependent on Jesus our Savior and High Priest for that righteousness that He provides.
