Here’s a list of the religious things I’ve been told by church leaders.

  • You need to dress up for church because it shows the pastor you respect him. As long as I’m not wearing pajamas or dressing like a hooker than no one ought to tell me how to dress. The Bible says to dress modestly in 1 Timothy 2:9, but it doesn’t say you should dress like we are going to the opera.

  • You need to address your pastor with a title. The bible clearly says in Matthew 23:9 that we are not to call anyone father or teacher and that includes pastor or apostle.

  • You can’t dance unless you are on the dance team. David was not on a dance team when he danced before the Lord. 2 Samuel 6:14.

  • You can’t dance in church. Again, David spontaneously danced before the Lord and Miriam led the women to dance after the victory through the Red Sea.

  • You can’t have a ministry outside of the church without your pastor’s permission. Psalm 23 says that the Lord is your shepherd. The pastor is an undershepherd.  God leads us in paths of righteousness for his name sake not for the pastor’s glory.

  • You are in rebellion against God if you don’t listen to your pastor. Actually, you are in rebellion against God if you don’t listen to God as the Bible says in John 10:27. If your pastor tells you to do something and God tells you otherwise than you are free to do God’s will instead.

  • You need to have a ‘spiritual covering’ or you are out of the will of God. The Bible says that Jesus is our covering in Ephesians 1:22-23. The leadership covering concept is Old Testament theology. The covering part that is for today is regarding a husband and wife. A husband leads a wife in love and if he doesn't his prayers aren't answered. A wife is submissive to her husband with respect but she isn't a doormat without a voice. She brings a double witness. P.S. My pastor is not my husband.

  • If you don’t tithe than God will not protect you. Tithing is only for the first born son of the descendants of Israel and it only addresses the percentage of the crop and not money. Not everybody tithed in the Old Testament. During the year of Jubilee nobody tithed. Tithing has been done away with in the New Testament. We are to give with our heart as 2 Corithains 9:7 says and not under pressure.

  • Women can’t be prophets or apostles. There were at least five prophetesses in the Old Testament and possibly one in the New Testament. Phillips daughters prophecied. Romans 16:7 says that Junia was among the apostles and that name is likely to be female. The epistles (letters to a group) were written by Paul and are now called 1 and 2 Cornthians. Actually they are in response to two letters. If all the letters would be set side-by-side than it would clearly reveal that Paul was saying that women can speak in the church. For more details please watch Jonathan Welton's YouTube videos regarding women in ministry. We do not need to wear a hat to prophecy folks.

  • Agree in prayer that our minds are bound to our pastor’s will. I don’t want my mind emeshed with anybody’s mind other than Christ’s. The Bible says we have the mind of Christ in 1 Corinthians 2:16.

  • You need to follow the protocol of the culture of your church. The Bible says we are to be as wise as a serpents but as innocent as a dove in Matthew 10:16. It does not say that we bend the words of the Bible in order to fit in with any culture.

  • That pastor has a fruitful ministry because he has lots of followers. Very few listened to Jeremiah, Isaiah or Ezekiel yet they obeyed God. The number of followers does not determine success in God's eyes. Hitler had many worshippers.

  • If you tithe than God will bless you. No, according to the Parable to the Sower you must plant your seed in 'good soil' then you can expect good results.
