THE WORTH OF A SOUL
dedicated to Jon J. Jamison, who was a good friend

The random thoughts of yesterday
Give way to organized delusion,
As the last sinner tries to make sense of the senseless
Then crashes in fog and illusion.
So he looks up to heaven
And he wonders just why
He should go on with living at all,
While the sulphurous demons
Of the bottomless pit
Wait with glee for his ending and fall.

If there was a God above
Who was manifest joy and peace and love
Would He leave me to walk all alone?
Besides, that's all nonsense and fairy tales
They said of an ape I was born.

But it does seem strange
For the length of my days
I have sensed someone greater than me
But this life holds no purpose
So I'll slip from its cold grip
And the pain will just cease,
I'll be free.

One last walk, perhaps
He thinks, just to look
At the birds and the trees,
One last chance
To breathe the fresh air
For soon, they will bury me.

As he rounds the corner near his home
A group of young people is gathered
And he crosses the street
No desire to meet
With their jokes or their barbs or their laughter.
But then one youth
Departs from their midst
And he's holding a book
Not a rock or a fist.
And he says, "Sir, excuse me
But I felt the Lord prompt me
To come and to tell you about Him.
For He loves you far greater
Than my words could now show you
And He died so that you could now know Him."

Well, we talked and we talked
And it all made such sense
And our talk became more than mere words.
For I felt the deep presence of the Lord Holy Ghost
And I deeply desired to know Him.
Then I knelt and I prayed
Right out there in the street
Not caring who saw or who heard
And my newfound friend brother
Knelt down right beside me
And touched heaven without saying a word.
