Hello to all. Today we are wrapping up the Introduction to the book of Romans, written by Paul the apostle to the Christian church at Rome over 2,000 years ago. One of the amazing things about this book is that it is as current as today’s news headlines. This is so because God is current and ageless. Whatever He wants to say to mankind, it is important to all mankind throughout all time.

This is also because man never really changes. His great problem is separation from God. It has been that way from the very beginning. It has not changed just because this is the 21st century. God says to us through the prophet Isaiah, “But your iniquities have separated you from your God; and your sins have hidden His face from you, so that He will not hear.” Isaiah 59:2.

In Romans Paul deals with the great problem and the solution. The book is broken into a framework of four basic sections:

“1) Chapters 1-8, which deal with the problem of righteousness.

2) Chapters 9-11, which deal with the problem of the Jews, the chosen people.

3) Chapters 12-15, which deal with practical questions of life and living.

4) Chapter 16, which is a letter of introduction for Phoebe, and a list of final personal greetings.”  Quoted from the Barclay commentary on Romans.

Romans is the quintessence of Pauline theology and of his gospel message. And it unerringly shows forth his great love for God and for man. MacArthur says this: “Though committed to truth and mission, he (Paul) had an immense, burning sense of God’s love that permeated everything he did, said, and wrote. The great apostle cannot be understood apart from his deep love for God, his love for believing brethren, and his love for unbelieving mankind, especially his fellow Jews. He spoke from profound personal experience as well as from divine revelation when he said, ‘The love of God has been poured out within our hearts through the Holy Spirit who was given to us.'” Romans 5:5.

It is this love which guides Paul’s words to us, from the first to the last. His driving passion is for people to really “get it” so that we will respond to the Lord’s call upon our lives, and that one day, “Christ will be formed in us.”  Galatians 4:19.

Next time we begin by taking a look at Romans 1:1-7. Until then, may our Lord protect and bless You!…Mike.
