They Did Not Believe

When they came back from the tomb, they told all these things to the Eleven and to all the others. It was Mary Magdalene, Joanna, Mary the mother of James, and the others with them who told this to the apostles. But they did not believe the women, because their words seemed to them like nonsense. Peter, however, got up and ran to the tomb. Bending over, he saw the strips of linen lying by themselves, and he went away, wondering to himself what had happened. Luke 24:9-12 NIV

The disciples would not accept the words of the women who had seen the two angels, and had been told about the Lord’s resurrection. They all seemed to be like doubting Thomas. Why could they not believe the women, in light of the fact that the Lord had told them three different times that He would rise from the dead. They really needed to see it for themselves. They needed to see the Lord face to face in order to believe that He had risen, just as He said He would.

Luke’s gospel does not mention John accompanying Peter in going to the tomb. So, Peter at least went to investigate the scene at the tomb. But, all he could do after seeing the strips of linen by themselves, is to go away, wondering what had happened. Oh, my goodness. How much more did he need to see. Was Peter, and the other disciples afraid to believe that what Jesus had told them really happened?

Don’t think down too much on the disciples. How often do we not believe what we have been told by the Lord? How much faith do each of us have in our Savior? Can we do that which comes with having faith the size of a mustard seed?

Remember, God’s thoughts are not our thoughts. Nor, are His ways our ways. With God everything is possible. Remain in Him and see that which the Lord can do.
