Spirit Committed to the Father

It was now about noon, and darkness came over the whole land until three in the afternoon, for the sun stopped shining. And the curtain of the temple was torn in two. Jesus called out with a loud voice, “Father, into your hands I commit my spirit.” When he had said this, he breathed his last. But all those who knew him, including the women who had followed him from Galilee, stood at a distance, watching these things. Luke 23:44-46, 49 NIV

Jesus knew His mission was completed. By dying for mankind, we would receive salvation. Knowing this, Jesus knew it was time to commit His spirit to the Father. The Heavenly Father is in control of everything. Who else would one wish to commit their spirit to than the Father, the creator of all.

Nearly five years ago I had a quadruple by-pass heart surgery. Just before going to the operating room, I realized I could possibly be near the end. So I prayed, and said, to the Father, and to Jesus, that all was in their hands. Who is there better to give one’s spirit to than He who is in control of all?

Notice that those who had followed Jesus watched His death from a distance. Did you know that this fulfilled a prophecy? In Psalm 38:11 we read “My loved ones and my friends stand apart from my plague; and my neighbors stand far off” Over two dozen prophecies were fulfilled just dealing with Christ’s crucifixion.

Next up for our savior was His burial, and then His glorious resurrection.
