In Luke 23:13-24, we read three attempts of Pilate to release Jesus. With each attempt, the crowd became more vehement that Pilate’s request would not be met.

On the first attempt, Pilate tells the crowd that Jesus had been brought to him for him to condemn the Lord. Pilate could not find a cause for condemning Jesus to death, and he even mentioned that the people’s king, king Herod had also not found a cause to condemn Jesus. The crowd wanted nothing of Pilate’s idea, and asked that an insurrectionist and murderer be released to them.

After Pilate’s second appeal, the crowd was more vociferous, stating that Jesus must be crucified. Pilate was failing miserably in his attempt to free Jesus.

One final time Pilate spoke to the crowd, letting them know he wanted to punish Jesus and then release Him. The intensity of the crowd’s demands finally caused Pilate to give in to their demands.

A weak procurator and a violent, angry crowd were all part of the perfect plan of the heavenly Father. What is foolishness to mankind is God’s wisdom and love revealed through His perfect plan for our salvation.
