Keeping a close watch on him, they sent spies, who pretended to be sincere. They hoped to catch Jesus in something he said, so that they might hand him over to the power and authority of the governor. So the spies questioned him: “Teacher, we know that you speak and teach what is right, and that you do not show partiality but teach the way of God in accordance with the truth. Is it right for us to pay taxes to Caesar or not?” He saw through their duplicity and said to them, “Show me a denarius. Whose image and inscription are on it?” “Caesar’s,” they replied. He said to them, “Then give back to Caesar what is Caesar’s, and to God what is God’s.” They were unable to trap him in what he had said there in public. And astonished by his answer, they became silent. Luke 20:20-26 NIV

It was quite easy for Jesus to see the true intent of those who attempted to trap Him into saying or doing something wrong. Yet, Jesus used the situation in order to teach that which is of importance.

We all must make decisions in life which do not directly impact our spiritual life. We earn a living, so that we can provide for ourselves and our families. We pay taxes on our incomes, and various other actions. Jesus wants us to obey laws established, as long as they are not contradictory to what God seeks for us to do.

Do we spend as much time giving to God what is His as we do to that which is of this world? We must give God our time in prayer and in worship, and in carrying out the work He asks of us. Do we approach it with the love and sincerity with which we approach tasks of this world?

When we give to God, we must give with all that is within us: our whole heart, our whole mind, and our whole soul. We must give to God in this manner, as He has given us all that we have, including our heart, mind, and soul.

So, give to this world that which is of this world, but give to God what is God’s. You belong to Him!
