“No one can serve two masters. Either you will hate the one and love the other, or you will be devoted to the one and despise the other. You cannot serve both God and money.” Luke 16:13 NIV
First off, let’s note that Jesus did not say that one cannot possess money and be attuned with God. What He did say was that man cannot serve money and God also. To serve money entails being a slave to money, being controlled by it. Those who true desire is for money have their own well-being in mind and not that of their fellow man. This truly is in direct contrast to that which pleases God.
Jesus speaks much to us about serving others. To be first in God’s kingdom, one must be the servant of all. You cannot be interested in self and serve God. God will take care of you and your needs if you turn your life over to Him. Do as Christ commands. Don’t let yourself be a slave to money. Money is a false God. It cannot provide what you truly need. It can only provide what is of this world. What spiritual truth can be found in money? In the 1960s the Beatles did a song called “Can’t Buy Me Love”. Just as money cannot buy one love, it also cannot buy one God’s blessings. You cannot buy that which is of Heaven. It is a gift, given freely by the Father and the Son to those who believe in Christ and follow after Him.
Be the servant of God, not money.
