Where is the Time for Rest?

As Jesus and his disciples were on their way, he came to a village where a woman named Martha opened her home to him. She had a sister called Mary, who sat at the Lord’s feet listening to what he said. But Martha was distracted by all the preparations that had to be made. She came to him and asked, “Lord, don’t you care that my sister has left me to do the work by myself? Tell her to help me!” “Martha, Martha,” the Lord answered, “you are worried and upset about many things, but few things are needed—or indeed only one. Mary has chosen what is better, and it will not be taken away from her.” Luke 10:38-42 NIV

The alarm clock awakens us from sleep. We are out of bed quickly. No time to waste. The plate is full for today. Grab the “to do” list as we head out the door, ready to tick off each item as it is completed. By the time our day ends and we are ready to crawl into bed for some much needed rest, we say to ourselves “well done. All items on the list accomplished.” But was the day truly beneficial to us? Was there any time for rest in the day? Was anything of real importance learned? Much too often we are another Martha, worried and upset about too many things. Just because items are checked off a “to do” list does not mean a productive day was achieved, unless the items on the list were things to do for the Lord. Was time spent reading the word of God on your list, what about quiet time in prayer with Him? Did that make the “to do” list. Jesus tells us that He will never take away what is better for us. What we need to do is realize what is better for us, and seek that out. Put those items at the top of the daily task list. With that accomplished you will have many more days crawling into bed at night and be blessed to see the fruitfulness of your day.

If you are Martha, I pray tomorrow will be less worrisome and stressful for you. Change your “to do” list. As for you Mary, sleep peacefully in Christ!
