Stumble Not Over Christ

“Go back and report to John what you have seen and heard: The blind receive sight, the lame walk, those who have leprosy are cleansed, the deaf hear, the dead are raised, and the good news is proclaimed to the poor. Blessed is anyone who does not stumble on account of me.” Luke 7:22-23 NIV

What does it mean not to stumble on account of Christ? I believe this to mean that this is one who does not take offence in Christ.

Why would one take offence in Christ?

Some would do so as they do not totally believe He is who He says He is. They might believe He was a good man, and maybe even a prophet. Yet, they do not believe He is the Son of God, sent to us to save us from our sinful nature and eternal destruction.

Some would take offence to Jesus because of His doctrine. The doctrine of Christ is so much different from the doctrine of man. Why should that not be? Man’s thoughts are not God’s thoughts, and man’s ways are not God’s ways. If Christ had taught and lived by man’s doctrine we would never have learned about the will of our Heavenly Father nor would we have received the wonderful gift of salvation.

Many take offence to Christ because of the manner of living required by Him in order to be His follower. Many are self-seeking, desiring worldly treasures. Sacrificing for the good of others does not fit their agenda.

When many see the trials they would face in accepting Christ, it becomes a stumbling block for them. They are not willing to face these times. They do not know that Christ would see them through these times. They do not understand the eternal gifts they give up by not accepting the Lord as their Master and Savior.

Let us not stumble over Christ. He is steadfast in His love, mercy and compassion for us. He saved us from eternal destruction. We have a wonderful life in Him! AMEN!!
