Scripture Fulfilled for You

He went to Nazareth, where he had been brought up, and on the Sabbath day he went into the synagogue, as was his custom. He stood up to read, and the scroll of the prophet Isaiah was handed to him. Unrolling it, he found the place where it is written: “The Spirit of the Lord is on me, because he has anointed me to proclaim good news to the poor. He has sent me to proclaim freedom for the prisoners and recovery of sight for the blind, to set the oppressed free, to proclaim the year of the Lord’s favor.” Then he rolled up the scroll, gave it back to the attendant and sat down. The eyes of everyone in the synagogue were fastened on him. He began by saying to them, “Today this scripture is fulfilled in your hearing.” All spoke well of him and were amazed at the gracious words that came from his lips. Luke 4:16-22a NIV

Jesus told those in the synagogue, that the prophesy of Isaiah was being fulfilled in their very presence. Today is no different than that day 2000 years ago.

Let us see what was fulfilled.

The Spirit of the Lord was certainly upon Jesus. He is the Son of God. He is part of the Trinity. Why would not the Spirit of Truth be within Him? And as He promises to those who believe in Him, the Spirit of Truth also indwells us, those who belong to Christ Jesus.

Jesus was anointed to preach the Good News to the poor. It is no different today. Jesus has appointed us, His followers, to share the Good News with the poor. Who are the poor? Actually, we are all poor. Without the Lord we are lost, destitute, and doomed. But, when we accept Christ and we turn our lives over to Him, we become richly blessed. We have treasure beyond any the world can provide.

Until we accept Christ, we are prisoners. We are imprisoned by our sinful nature, our desire for earthly wants. These are temporary “treasures”. There is no eternity to them. With Christ we are freed from imprisonment to this world and all its destructiveness. We now belong to Christ.

Do you realize you were once blind? You were blind to the real truth. When one accepts Christ as their savior, spiritual blindness is removed. We can see what truly matters in this world. We can see what has eternal worth.

Christ sets the oppressed free. We do face trials and tribulation within this world. Yet, our hearts, minds, and souls have been set free by Christ. What a fantastic feeling it is to be free! Free in Jesus Christ!

God’s favor came upon mankind with the incarnation of God the Son. Even after 2000 years, God’s favor is still with us. His favor rests upon those who are children of God.

Oh yes, my dear brothers and sisters, what Jesus Christ said 2000 years ago is so absolutely the truth today. “Today this scripture is fulfilled in your hearing.” AMEN!!
