That Which is not Ours

Peter turned and saw that the disciple whom Jesus loved was following them. (This was the one who had leaned back against Jesus at the supper and had said, “Lord, who is going to betray you?”) When Peter saw him, he asked, “Lord, what about him?” Jesus answered, “If I want him to remain alive until I return, what is that to you? You must follow me.” (John 21:20-22) NIV

Here we have Peter again going beyond where he should go. Just as he had been bold enough to claim to Christ that he would die for Him, he wants to know what will be asked of the other disciple. But, this was part of the character of Peter.

Do we as the followers of Christ today, spend too much time considering what other believers do and don’t do, rather than just focusing on what the Lord has asked us as an individual to do for Him? If we spend time focusing on that which is not our business, we cannot devote ourselves fully to that which Christ asks of us. There is plenty of work to be done for the advancement of God’s kingdom. We, the followers of Christ have each been given specific gifts through the Holy Spirit to use for doing God’s work. What one member of the body of Christ can do could be truly difficult for another member of His body to do. We do not need to worry about work of others. That concern belongs to Christ. We must devote ourselves to what He asks of us. He is in control, and watches over all that is done for the advancement of the kingdom. So, let go of others responsibilities and handle your own. God will use the gifts He has endowed you with to accomplish His will.

Jesus, our Lord and Savior, thank You for all the gifts you have given to each of us. Help us through the wisdom of the Spirit of Truth to use these gifts to advance Your kingdom. Help us to focus on what You ask of us and to not step beyond that which is asked of us. You the Master know how each piece fits within the puzzle of the perfect plan of the Heavenly Father. We let go to You all that does not belong to us, and carry on doing that which You ask us to do. AMEN!!
