The Empty Church


Heavenly Father, where have they gone,
your people who once worshipped you?
They came from the city, they came from the country,
to sit in their well-worn pews.

They called you their Maker, their Lord and their Savior,
and knew that you were divine.
They trusted in Jesus and your Holy Bible,
and Sundays were ever so fine.

Sunday School rooms were sunny and brimming with ages
from young to old.
To study your Word was a pleasure indeed,
as the truth of the Bible was told.

The singing of hymns and clapping of hands made quite a
magnificent sound.
Then the preacher would say in his own special way,
that the grace of Lord Jesus abounds.

Church was all day, if weather permitted,
dinner they ate on the grounds.
Children played games, the adults would visit, and
peace prevailed all around.

The people shared stories of your wondrous glory and the lives
that Jesus retrieved.
They prayed for themselves, their brothers and sisters, and a
nation that still believed.

Now, Lord, your people live as they please and you are not
part of their plan.
But one day surprise may open their eyes, and judgment
will be upon man.

Near empty churches still stand in their places, awaiting
the faithful few,
to come in and worship and sing praises loudly and know
that it's all about You.
