Since the invention of ties, men have worn them to church on Sundays as a way to 'honor God in his house.' One of the rationales given for this practice is that it is a way to show that Christians are separated from the world. In addition, the analogy is made to having a meeting with the president. For example, some say, 'You would not dress down to see the most powerful man in the country, so why would you do so in the presence of Almighty God? Are these good reasons for why we should wear a tie to church? I do not believe so.
First, wearing a tie to church does not necessarily demonstrate separation from the world, but rather conformity to its customs. For example, how many worldly business men who care nothing for God wear ties every day to work? How many worldly politicians who care nothing for the reign of Christ in their hearts and countries wear ties as part of their profession? Second, according to God's Word, the Lord is not impressed when fallen human beings dress up. 1 Samuel 16:7 declares 'For the Lord seeth not as man seeth; for man looketh on the outward appearance, but the Lord looketh on the heart.' Formal wear cannot hide the state of one's soul and heart before Christ since 'Neither is there any creature that is not manifest in his sight: but all things are naked and opened unto the eyes of him with whom we have to do' (Hebrews 4:13).
Moreover, the sin of partiality can be exhibited when dressing up in one's 'Sunday best' becomes the only acceptable standard. James writes, 'For if there come unto your assembly a man with a gold ring, in fine apparel, and there come in also a poor man in shabby clothing; And you have respect to him that wears the fine clothing, and say unto him, Sit here in a good place; and say to the poor, Stand there, or sit here under my footstool: Are you not then partial in yourselves, and are become judges of evil thoughts?' (James 2:2-4). So wearing a tie to church is either done for God or for man. If it is done for God, we have already seen He sees right through it into the person's heart. If it is done for man, then it is done with the wrong motive since seeking the approval of other believers by the way we dress is to be a man-pleaser and to donwplay the acceptance we have with Christ through the gospel. In short, as believers in Christ, we should not allow any church leaders or members make us feel guilty or pressured to conform to this man-made standard of holiness. Ask yourself, if Jesus Christ wore what he wore in first century Israel in your church today, would members look down on him or judge him as not having acceptable clothing?
