TORN BETWEEN TWO WORLDS
It was a day desired by everyone else for it was beautiful and pleasant, the sky was bright blue and the wind blew gently and pleasantly, and had been so since morning. The park in the center of the city’s metropolis was empty, save for the array of park benches and beautiful flowers. It was always so at this time of the day, for most had work to attend to. It had a little population at weekends from picnics to weddings and then the usual surge during festivities. But this morning was different, the park had an unexpected visitor, and had it eyes, one would find it staring after this figure in amazement. But this figure went and sat down on one of the benches backing the gate, preferably to prevent any disturbance or distractions. There in the midst of the silence that hung in the garden, this figure sat and gradually dwelt on the issues at hand. That morning, work had not been important. To find out that all that you have lived for and believed was a lie, to come to the understanding that all that was needed to live the life you’ve believed can be attained could be achieved with a single decision; the decision to believe or the decision not to. It was beginning to dawn (quite unpleasantly) that all “efforts made” had indeed being in vain. All that had been required was to accept, and believe that everything in life together with all that it came with, in death and all that came after it, hung on this. Far into the landscape that dotted the horizons adjacent to the park, stood a couple of mud huts. Just outside one sat an elderly man sweating away in the morning heat. Not minding the weather, he smiled as a much younger woman, brought his meal. Bowing his head, he spent some moments in companionable silence. The figure watched, the hunger for that dependency arising from within. Could he attain this same attitude, he had just seen the old man exhibit, could there be a greater satisfaction than the mere church attendance, was he truly, going to be happy without all that he used to do, could he live through life now guided by one truth, that no matter the circumstance, the death, burial and resurrection of one man made all the difference, and that in accepting this, practically everything in his life would change; beginning with his decisions? The life he was about to embrace was worlds apart from the one he used to know, for a while he had been torn between the two, and now he was going to make a choice. At that very moment, it seemed time came to a standstill, the wind seemed to cease, the flowers no longer caressed by the wind’s touch stood still in reaction, and the unseen stood in awe and joy, as a soul on his knees, made a confession that would change him for the rest of his life.
