Jesus said to them, “If God were your Father, you would love me, for I have come here from God. I have not come on my own; God sent me. Why is my language not clear to you? Because you are unable to hear what I say. You belong to your father, the devil, and you want to carry out your father’s desires. He was a murderer from the beginning, not holding to the truth, for there is no truth in him. When he lies, he speaks his native language, for he is a liar and the father of lies. Yet because I tell the truth, you do not believe me! Can any of you prove me guilty of sin? If I am telling the truth, why don’t you believe me? Whoever belongs to God hears what God says. The reason you do not hear is that you do not belong to God.” John 8:42-47 NIV
Jesus often spoke using parables. He did this so the learned would hear but not understand. Those whose hearts were closed to truth would never accept what Jesus said. In this passage though Jesus is quite clear in explaining what He had to say. He had come not on His own, but had been sent by the Heavenly Father. The reason the unbelievers did not accept Him was because they could not hear nor accept truth. Their hearts were full of lies, as they were slaves to Satan. They were self-centered individuals, seeking only what advanced their own good. They had love only for themselves and anyone who believed in them. They had no love of God within them. Jesus told them that He knew why His language was not clear to them. They could not accept truth, the real truth that stood right in their presence. How blind they truly were! Jesus told these people that they did not belong to God. It is unfortunate for them that they did not heed Christ’s warning, and repent. Instead they continued to carry out the desires of their father, the devil. Jesus also explained to them that none of them could prove Him guilty of sin. Jesus was among us as a man, yet He never sinned, because He is God’s only Son. Therefore, He is full of truth, because to lie is to sin.
Thank you Lord Jesus that you have opened our hearts, minds, and souls to the eternal truth, the truth through which we are saved. You Lord Jesus are that truth! You are our Savior, our King, and our Lord. You have chosen us, we have not chosen You. And we are so truly blessed that You have done so! May we always follow in Your footsteps. May we remain on the narrow path which leads to the kingdom of God. May we always do Your will, so as to please the Heavenly Father and You. AMEN!!
