Proverbs 16:3 - Commit to the LORD whatever you do, and he will establish your plans.
For businesses and organizations, the last quarter of the year is the best time to look at the performance of the year and to prepare for the coming new year. This is the time for celebration, giving recognition to those who contributed to the success, and planning to rectify the errors of the past year.
Plans are made for many reasons. It serves as the guide for the people in the organization to follow, and for the managers to check on the performance of the staff. Plans are also designed to prepare for unforeseen and disruptive events and changing environments. One of the mindset in planning is that the goals of the plan should surpass the results of the past year. Planning therefore is historical, that is, we set our plans based on the performance of the past and the information we have at hand.
Despite the popular saying ‘change is the only permanent thing in this world,’ people are still caught unaware and unprepared most of the time. We see things happen where the best-laid plans goes awry and we are clueless on what to do and how to cope with the new situation. Risk managers would advise that we adopt a forward-looking mindset and to always have in mind Murphy’s Law – things go wrong and it will happen when you least expect it. The antidote for this is to have several plans, aside from the main plan, there is a need for a Plan B and even Plan C, depending on several scenarios that would happen.
Many of us are having the same perspective in planning. We plan great things for ourselves and our future. We even plan for other people, as parents dreaming dreams for their children. We want the world to evolve around our perspective and we plan for that. There are times we feel changes happening in our lives not according to our plan, and we freak out. In time like this, we ask why change happen.
The Bible gives us a different perspective because children of God, we live by faith. We depend on God’s provision and wisdom for us to face the challenges in the world. We wait for God’s leading and we follow where the Holy Spirit lead us. But it does not mean we do not have to plan. Proverbs 16:9 says, ‘In their hearts humans plan their course, but the Lord establishes their steps.’
So Christians should plan, and we have to pray that our plans are aligned with God’s plan for our lives. We have to listen and wait for the confirmation. Our plans should not be based on our past performance. Planning by faith requires preparing beyond what we have. Sometimes events in our lives are way off your dreams, but we need not worry. Be encouraged by Proverbs 16:4, 'The LORD works out everything to its proper end...'
